Massachusetts has long been considered a Democratic stronghold.

That makes the new poll from Suffolk University and The Boston Globe all the more shocking.

It showed only 46% of registered Massachusetts voters said they approved of Joe Biden’s performance. Independent voters also put up rough numbers for the president, with only 39% approving.

Joe Biden carried the state with nearly 66% of the vote in 2020.

Strategist David Paleologos suggested the poll could have national implications.

“When independents in Massachusetts are that negative on an incumbent Democratic president who won this state going away, one wonders what an independent swing-state voter in Ohio, Nevada, or New Hampshire is thinking,” Paleologos said to the The Boston Globe. “It poses a real challenge for the midterm elections for Democrats.”
