State and federal codes groan under the weight of dumb laws passed with little to no understanding that, eventually, they may be enforced with extreme violence.

Such was the case recently in Ocean City, Maryland, where local law enforcement tased and beat a young people who were vaping in an area not approved in the local code.

The videos of the police actions went viral, and clearly showed how an absurd law can have horrifying consequences.

The local police issued a press release on the incidents that said:

We are aware of the social media videos circulating regarding this incident. Our officers are permitted to use force, per their training, to overcome exhibited resistance. All uses of force go through a detailed review process. The uses of force from these arrests will go through a multi-level examination by the Assistant Patrol Commander, the Division Commander and then by the Office of Professional Standards.

Great, fine. And remember, this was all started because some kids were vaping outside an approved area.

Review the arrests and the use of force. Then, for all the lawmakers who wrote and enacted this ridiculous law, a question: are you comfortable with the results of your handiwork? Because if you are, then the problem isn’t vaping. It’s you.
