Article from Reason by Nick Gillespie.
Fifteen million able-bodied adults on government welfare would have a better chance at economic betterment if they were taken off welfare.
That was the provocative proposition debated at the most recent Soho Forum debate, held on December 11 at New York’s Subculture theater in the East Village. Sponsored by Reason and moderated by Gene Epstein, the Soho Forum is a monthly, Oxford-style debate series that explores issues of particular interest to libertarians.
At the December 11 event, the Foundation for Government Accountability’s Tarren Bragdon defended the proposition while Neera Tanden of the Center for American Progress opposed it. As an Oxford-style debate, the audience (including those watching via Reason’s Facebook live stream) voted before and after the debate, with the winner being the person who moved more people to his or her side. It’s a lively conversation that features audience questions toward the end.

that is true of able bodied people I know after I was hurt with severe back injury I was told not to work anymore but I had a family to support and could not get help so I went to work at low wages but it was a paycheck I kept working even though I reinjured My back but keep going until the people and Dr said I could not work anymore so I was put on workmans comp. until I finally got on S/S disability but my point is I keep working until I could not at a job making a lot less than I was Used to and these abled bodied should to instead of living off the goverment
Yes, stop welfare, corporate welfare and agro subsidies first, than we can start talking about welfare for CITIZENS who are physicaly unable to work.
If you would read the article it is talking about able-bodied people, not those who are disabled.
Welfare is not helping people it’s disenabling them! Even the “disabled” or most of them can do something. We were created to work when we set up an environment that disenfranchises people form the work force it’s a mistake that needs fixed we now have third and fourth generational families living off of our hard work. It’s not the Government these people live off of it’s us the work force those of us that get up every day to work no matter what we do. This country is the greatest country on the planet, yet if we continue to pay people to do nothing to not contribute to society in some way, then we are doing them a disservice and we are doing wrong by them. Hand up’s yes hand outs no! For those that are unable to “work” mentally / physically like my daughter who is mentally and physically born with issues that she needs care 24/7 to deal with the daily human activities eating, and the by product of that, wiping her nose, slobber form her face, dressing her and bathing her, brushing her teeth and so on. We as a society need to care for these people and give them the best lives they can have. We need to teach our children the respect, joy, and the pride of work well done, honesty, a days work for a days wages, early on. Then we needs to teach them in our schools how to handle the money they have earned.
