An 18-year veteran of the Hazel Park Police Department is accused of stealing at least $85,000 from the department’s forfeiture accounts.
He resigned while suspended prior to the conclusion of an administrative and criminal investigation.
Hazel Park Police Chief Martin P. Barner said state police are conducting a third-party criminal investigation and the department is conducting an internal investigation.
“While conducting an internal audit of procedures involving non-drug forfeiture funds, inconsistencies were identified that lead to the immediate suspension without pay of” the officer on Sept. 11,” a statement from the department said. “To date, in excess of $85,000 has been identified as being embezzled.”
