Article from IJR from Jason Howerton.
A high school student in Hilliard, Ohio, didn’t want to pick sides in the contentious gun debate surrounding Wednesday’s “National Walkout,” so he stayed in class instead of joining the largely anti-gun protest or an alternative “study hall.”
Hilliard Davidson High School senior Jacob Shoemaker was then reportedly slapped with a suspension.
The student argued that divisive politics have no place in America’s schools and he refused to take sides in the debate, according to the Associated Press.
Shoemaker’s suspension citation was posted online, possibly by a friend, and the story quickly went viral.

I certainly hope he sues the school and the board as he will definitely win. What they did to this student was against his constitutional rights. In addition I truly hope that he and or his parents sues the individual’s responsible, personally for this suspension.
I pray the school has to admit wrong doing and apologize to this young man. In addition the one suspended him should be punished.
Good for you Jacob! You are absolutely right. This debate does not belong in the schools, it belongs to the agencies that failed the community. Sue your school system. Your 1st amendment rights were violated.
Why was my reply botched up by ridiculous ads, ads that were placed with the knowledge and permission of sight owners/operators?
The actions or antics of school officials appear to have crossed a line better left uncrossed. Prompt and strenuous legal action should be brought against offending parties, that is those who acted against the student. Oh by the way, where was the classroom teacher?
No issue is as important as this one. It’s a colossal problem and it’s public education itself. Public schools are in fact government schools, indoctrination centers if you will. The underpinning of this problem is government dominated education lured by unions that exist for only one purpose: money. Unions take money from teachers and give it to democrats. Democrats take from the union and give it to the teachers (tenure, guarantee against competition, growing salaries, short work schedules and all kinds of other perquisites). Public teaching has been fundamentally transformed into an enormous entitlement and dispensing entitlements is the heart of the democrat strategy.
It cannot be said too many times: the absence of competition is the problem. The primary problem with our current system is it faces no competition. It’s a monopoly in a nation where monopoly is considered a criminal enterprise for everyone else. In America, pupils are forced to attend at the point of a gun but are not protected with equivalent force. Parents, non-parents and businesses are forced to pay or lose their homes and businesses. And in the vast majority of communities, parents have no viable alternatives.
Everybody says sue. We know that the suspension was illeagal So why aren’t parents putting this principle to the ground and do the two step on him and others like him. Most people can’t afford a lawyer for suing. Parents need to take a tougher approach and stop this BS
Smart Kid.
THE KIDS PARENTS SHOULD SUE THE SCHOOL. TO SUSPENDS HIM FOR HIS OWN BELIEFS WE HAVE THE FIRST AMENDMENT FOR THE KIDS CHOICE. THE SCHOOL DOESN’T HAVE THAT RIGHT. THAT SHOWS ME THAT THEY ARE PUSHING DICTATORSHIP OVER OUR KIDS –WHICH RIGHT THEY DON’T HAVE. WE ARE A NATION OF FREE THINKERS.
